Retail - Point Of Sale

"It's always wise to look ahead, but difficult to look further than you can see."
-Winston Churchill

Computer technology has had a significant impact on retail stores. All but the smallest shops have replaced the old-fashioned cash register with powerful Point of Sale systems (POS) that allow retailers to manage all aspects of their retail business. Today, most items have UPC bar-codes labels or EPC tags (based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology) as well as electronic article surveillance (EAS) tags to help retailers decrease shoplifting and track inventory. Intelligent POS systems are used to track inventory, monitor sales activities, alert retailers of impending thefts and track customer purchasing information. In addition modern POS systems need to be able to handle all types of financial transactions. Most POS systems are designed to be able to accept virtually any type of cashless payment, including all card types and a variety of check-based options. KAV Enterprise Inc. has been assisting its customers with developing and implementing state-of-the-art solutions for more than two decades. Below is a list of some of the exciting projects that we have been a part of:

  • Developed EPC-RFID proof of concept/demonstration software
  • Developed replacement CPU boards for POS controllers - this extended the economic life of older NCR POS terminals. One of the new features added was the ability to accept cashless payments, including all credit and debit cards. This function was not available in the older NCR POS terminals. Large retailers such as Sears, and Mervyn's were able to update their old terminals and save millions of dollars.
  • Debit card - developed one of the first debit card systems used by retailers in Australia
  • POS software - developed cross platform UNIX/Windows POS software
  • Developed software that interfaced to printers and barcode scanners
