Retail - Point Of Sale

Computer technology has had a significant impact on retail stores. All but the smallest shops have replaced the old-fashioned cash register with powerful Point of Sale systems (POS) that allow retailers to manage all aspects of their retail business. Today, most items have UPC bar-codes labels or EPC tags (based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology) as well as electronic article surveillance (EAS) tags to help retailers decrease shoplifting and track inventory. Intelligent POS systems are used to track inventory, monitor sales activities, alert retailers of impending thefts and track customer purchasing information. In addition modern POS systems need to be able to handle all types of financial transactions. Most POS systems are designed to be able to accept virtually any type of cashless payment, including all card types and a variety of check-based options.
